HAMMER KING – INTERVISTA ESCLUSIVA A TITAN FOX V • (English version below)
A distanza di appena 14 mesi dall’uscita della loro ultima ed omonima release discografica, i teutonici Hammer King tornano alle luci della ribalta con un nuovo album. “Kingdemonium” vedrà la luce il prossimo 19 agosto su Napalm Records e ci presenta una band con tanta voglia di spaccare il mondo e di portare la propria musica oltre le barriere europee. Per l’occasione, Metalforce vi presenta una nuova intervista condotta con il frontman e il chitarrista Titan Fox V che così si racconta ai nostri microfoni…
Ciao Titan Fox V, benvenuto su Metalforce.it per questa nostra prima chiacchierata! Come stai?
TITAN FOX V – Ciao! Sto bene, fantasticamente! Prima di tutto, sono molto contento di essere in tua compagnia, è sempre un piacere parlare con chi viene dall’Italia, tu sei la quinta persona oggi, sulle sette interviste che ho programmato, per cui mi fa molto piacere. Ho creduto di potermi stancare dopo un po’, ma a dire il vero mi sento meglio rispetto a prima. È meraviglioso poter parlare con così tante persone, mi piace moltissimo. Fuori fa caldo, questa è un’estate brutalmente calda e posso stare beatamente in casa a fare qualcosa di veramente interessante. Quando porterò a termine questa sessione di interviste, mi recherò al lago e andrò a nuotare, il clima è fantastico.
Oggi siamo qui per parlare del nuovo album degli Hammer King, intitolato “Kingdemonium”. Il disco uscirà tra poco meno di una settimana. Quale è la tua sensazione nel pubblicare la tua arte? Quali, invece, sono le tue aspettative in merito a questa nuova release?
TITAN FOX V – Finché scrivi canzoni e le registri e quando ti ritrovi in studio, ti concentri davvero sul lavoro che devi svolgere, capire se le linee vocali sono buone o meno, se le chitarre suonano fantasticamente e capire se tutto è al posto giusto. Dopo un po’ ovviamente inizi a pensare a quel che dirà la gente. Questo è il punto dove, certamente, inizi forse a sentirti un po’ nervoso. Che cosa succederà? Che cosa dirà la gente? Al momento siamo tutti molto rilassati e molto entusiasti di sapere che le persone sembrino apprezzare questo nuovo disco esattamente come quello precedente.
Questo album giunge a distanza di un anno dal precedente, omonimo disco in studio. Che cosa vi ha spinti a dare alle stampe un altro album in così poco tempo? Avevate materiale a sufficienza per produrre altri dischi o, al contrario, vi sentivate ispirati?
TITAN FOX V – A dire il vero, si tratta del fottuto coronavirus. Voglio dire, non potevamo fare nessun concerto, abbiamo fatto – credo – sei o sette concerti lo scorso anno e c’era molto tempo libero. Quando sei un musicista, non vuoi rimanere fermo e vuoi scrivere canzoni, suonare. Credo che fosse ottobre quando Napalm ci ha inviato un’email chiedendoci: “Hey, ci piacerebbe fare un altro album con voi”, noi eravamo molto contenti, perché volevamo pubblicare un altro album con questa etichetta. Ci hanno detto: “Sembra che i festival si terranno nel 2022, per cui sarebbe interessante avere un album quando inizierà la stagione”. Ci siamo detti: “Sì, è un’idea magnifica, ci piace”, di tutta risposta loro ci hanno detto: “Quando vorrete avere l’album pronto per essere presentato ai festival, dovrete avere già il lavoro finito per il 1 marzo”. Questa è una cosa interessante, perché era un periodo di tempo molto limitato! Ricordo di aver parlato con il batterista e lui è la persona più critica in assoluto dentro la band! Gli ho chiesto: “Dolph, pensi che potremmo farcela?”, lui disse: “Sì, penso di sì”, così mi sono detto: “Okay, se dici che possiamo farcela, allora ce la faremo”. Eravamo come quelle band degli anni ’80, eravamo così, focalizzati su questo album e abbiamo lavorato. Abbiamo dato tutto quello che potevamo per questo disco e siamo entrati in studio di registrazione il 31 gennaio. È stata una cosa piuttosto celere, se pensi a ciò che facevano le band negli anni ’80, ti verrà da pensare che gli Iron Maiden pubblicavano un album ogni anno, a volte i Saxon addirittura due o lo stesso facevano i Priest nello stesso arco temporale. Credo che le band in quegli anni facessero la stessa cosa, perché andavano in tour e registravano tutto in un solo anno. Noi abbiamo fatto praticamente la medesima cosa, per cui lo spirito dell’album è così fresco perché non abbiamo avuto il tempo di rimuginarci su, abbiamo dato tutto ciò che potevamo.
Si tratta del primo disco che vede tra le proprie fila il nuovo bassista Günt von Schratenau, quale è stato il suo contributo su “Kingdemonium”? Come descriveresti la sua bravura?
TITAN FOX V – Ha contribuito in un’atmosfera molto piacevole. È una bella persona con la quale stare ed è un bassista brutalmente bravo. È quel genere di persona che volevamo avere nella band da diversi anni e ora che lui stesso ha voluto prendervi parte, ha avuto il tempo e tutto è stato perfetto. Quando è entrato nella band e ha suonato con noi la prima volta, mi ha detto: “Sai, probabilmente conosco cinque canzoni”, gli risposi: “Ok, perché no?” e quando è tornato, conosceva già 14 dei nostri brani e tra questi c’era un pezzo che nemmeno avevamo suonato, per cui abbiamo dovuto impararlo! Quando abbiamo lavorato assieme al disco, eravamo tutti quanti nella stessa saletta tutto il tempo e ognuno ha dato il proprio contributo ai pezzi. A volte è davvero importante, persino quando tu stai fermo lì e dici: “Non credo che questa sia una parte ottimale, l’altra suona meglio”. Abbiamo davvero lavorato come una squadra per tutto il tempo.
Al momento avete condiviso due soli singoli, “Pariah’s Is My Name” and “Invisible King”. Che accoglienza hanno ricevuto dal pubblico?
TITAN FOX V – È stato piuttosto positivo, ma differente. Sembra che soprattutto agli americani sia piaciuto “Pariah Is My Name” maggiormente, perché non sono davvero presi dal melodic metal europeo e agli europei piace maggiormente “Invisible King”. Fondamentalmente il responso è stato molto positivo per entrambi i brani ed il prossimo mercoledì uscirà l’ultimo video dedicato a questa release, che altro non è che la stessa titletrack del disco, “Kingdemonium”, che uscirà con un video epico. Abbiamo realizzato un videoclip fantastico, molto cupo dove recitiamo e molto altro, è stato molto diverso dagli altri video e questo aiuterà totalmente la band a salire di livello perché risulta super professionale.
Ti andrebbe di condividere un aneddoto divertente riguardante le sessioni di registrazione del disco?
TITAN FOX V – Ce ne è uno, ma a dire il vero non è molto divertente, si tratta perlopiù di un momento “wow”. Eravamo in studio di registrazione, Gino aveva avuto un piccolo incidente mentre stava facendo bollire dell’acqua, stava preparando del tè in una teiera, ma la teiera si è rotta a causa del troppo calore e questo non dovrebbe accadere, in quanto dovrebbe reggere temperature elevate. Gino si è bruciato la gamba sinistra in maniera molto seria, quando ci trovavamo nel bel mezzo delle registrazioni in studio e lui avrebbe dovuto registrare i cori insieme a noi. È venuto in studio pieno di dolori, è stato molto brutto, tant’è che ci ha detto: “Quando sono a casa, sento solamente il dolore. Quando sono qui, il dolore è l o stesso, ma faccio qualcosa che mi distrae”. Noi cantavamo qualcosa come dodici ore e mezza al giorno, o forse erano 14? Non me lo ricordo. È stato un processo molto lungo e lui avrebbe dovuto cantare tutto il tempo, per cui questo è stato il momento più alto del disco, vedere la sua dedizione per portare a termine il lavoro, non importava che cosa fosse successo, quindi chapeau a Gino, come direbbero i francesi. È stato impressionante.
Il disco è stato prodotto da Charles Greywolf (Powerwolf), mentre il missaggio e il mastering sono stati affidati a Jacob Hansen degli Hansen Studios. Che cosa vorresti condividere in merito al loro operato?
TITAN FOX V – Posso dire che una delle migliori cose che ci siano successe nel corso di questi ultimi due anni probabilmente è stata avere una squadra di persone magnifiche attorno alla band. Avevamo Jacob Hansen per il sound, ovviamente, Charles ha lavorato con noi anche per la produzione di altri album, abbiamo Mirko Witzki che ha realizzato i nostri video, Ingo Spörl è il responsabile delle nostre copertine e dei vari layout, Peter Sallai è il disegnatore ufficiale delle copertine. Abbiamo un team di persone magnifiche con le quali lavoriamo e che ci aiutano, ci ispirano. Ero in loro compagnia ieri, abbiamo mangiato sushi perché sia io che Charlie siamo grandissimi fan dei Ramones e ci piace molto il sushi. Quando eravamo in studio, il ristorante sushi non faceva consegne, poiché c’erano troppe richieste e c’erano ancora problematiche legate al coronavirus, per cui c’erano davvero troppi ordini da smaltire. Questa è stata la nostra prima produzione senza l’ausilio del sushi, il che era uno scandalo, per cui ieri ci siamo seduti a questo ristorante e abbiamo mangiato sushi. Ho detto a Charles: “Ora la produzione è perfetta”, è un amico e un ragazzo fantastico, è una persona molto rilassata e concentrata, persino dopo 14 ore di cori, era ancora di ottimo umore ed era lì a registrare. Ci ha detto: “Anche se servirà più tempo, dovrà essere perfetto”, il suo spirito è molto, molto buono. È una persona fantastica, così come lo è Jacob Hansen, mi piacciono molto i dischi che ha prodotto per i Pretty Maids, ci piaceva molto come ha prodotto quegli album, volevamo avere Jacob a bordo perché fa metal tradizionale in un modo molto pesante e commerciale. È esattamente ciò che volevamo, il nostro album doveva suonare melodico, commerciale, ma allo stesso tempo molto pesante. Non so cosa faccia veramente Jacob, ma ogni volta che realizza per noi il missaggio, mi piacciono totalmente le mie linee vocali e da cantante, tendi ad essere sempre molto autocritico; quando hai Jacob che ti realizza il missaggio, tutto diventa perfetto. Non so come faccia.
Mi piacerebbe focalizzarmi, ora, sulla copertina. In un primo momento mi ha ricordato qualcosa di “Carolus Rex” dei Sabaton. Cosa potresti dirmi di questo bellissimo pezzo d’arte? In che modo si lega anche al concept del disco?
TITAN FOX V – È interessante, voglio dire si tratta di Peter Sallai, è lo stesso personaggio che ha fatto la copertina. Abbiamo iniziato a lavorare con Peter Sallai proprio perché stavamo cercando qualcuno che fosse specializzato in questo genere musicale e che avesse un’ottima mano nel disegno e nella creazione di copertine di dischi power metal o per band heavy metal, a dire il vero band popolari e conosciute. Voglio dire, so che nel metal alla gente non piace quando dici: “Volevo vendere”, ma sinceramente, visto tutto il tempo ed il denaro che abbiamo investito nella band, doveva vendere, altrimenti saremmo stati spacciati e non potevamo fermarci. Stavamo, quindi, cercando qualcuno che potesse davvero piacerci e, allo stesso tempo, sapevamo che Peter Sallai era la persona giusta. Dopo due anni di coronavirus, tutti quanti hanno cercato un modo per sopravvivere, poiché avevamo investito tantissimi soldi dal momento in cui credevamo molto in questo gruppo, ma se non avessimo iniziato ad avere indietro qualche guadagno, allora non avremmo più avuto soldi rimasti. Ovviamente, tutti gli amanti del metal che dicono: “Non mi interessa ciò che dice la gente, lo faccio solo per me stesso”, o credono fermamente nella band, o lo dicono tanto per dire, perché la musica heavy metal è un genere musicale per le persone che amano cantare insieme. Se a nessuno piace la musica, non sarà la stessa cosa.
Secondo te, quale figura storica potrebbe apprezzare “Kingdemonium”?
TITAN FOX V – Questa è probabilmente la domanda più difficile! Probabilmente sarebbe stato d’aiuto se io non avessi scritto brani durante le lezioni di storia a scuola, cosa che poi ho fatto. I miei insegnanti pensavano che scrivessi ciò che loro dicevano, ma in realtà stavo scrivendo canzoni. Proverò a risponderti dicendo che forse potrebbe essere Giulio Cesare.
La vita artistica è da considerarsi solitaria? Che cosa fai per controbilanciarla alla vita personale?
TITAN FOX V – Quando fai parte di un gruppo, c’è molta gente intorno a te ed è una buona cosa. Domani andrò a fare escursionismo con uno dei ragazzi della band, per cui abbiamo il piacere che la gente con la quale lavoriamo solitamente siano amici e siano persone interessanti, ma in un certo modo, non lo sei, probabilmente hai ragione. Voglio dire, quando guardi le persone normali, sai che queste andranno in palestra due volte la settimana o qualcosa del genere. Noi vogliamo sempre fare musica, voglio dire, più la band diventa grande, più ognuno di noi dovrà fare le cose da solo. Oggi non sono da solo, sto parlando con le persone, ma sono a casa da solo a parlare con la gente online. Questo comporta molte, molte ore, ma sto in contatto con le persone. Alla fine non è davvero una vita solitaria, ma a volte è strano che tu debba dipendere dalla tua arte. Quando componi canzoni e ogni volta inizi a scrivere un album, le prime idee non sono buone, è sempre la stessa cosa, ti senti depresso, anche se sai che arriveranno brani migliori. All’inizio pensi: “Oddio, mi sento perso” ed una volta che le canzoni buone arrivano, ti senti il re del mondo, perché creare musica è la cosa migliore del mondo, almeno se sei un musicista! Forse quando mi ritrovo a pensare alle persone di cui sono un grande fan, mi viene in mente Freddie Mercury o Rob Halford, le persone più estreme saranno probabilmente quelle che tanti apprezzano di più, perché hanno qualcosa di speciale. Forse perché in un certo modo gli stessi cantanti vengono visti come persone strane dalla gente, perché per fare questo mestiere devi essere un determinato tipo di persona, qualcuno che davvero vuole fare questo lavoro. Ovviamente questo comporta che a volte, forse, la gente si senta così, a volte si sente meglio, altre un po’ meno, e forse gli artisti si sentiranno così, ma devi imparare a conviverci. Se non ti senti a tuo agio, sai che in un paio di giorni ti sentirai come se fossi la persona migliore del mondo. Ad ogni modo, imparare a conviverci, ma sì, questa è stata una bella domanda!
Gli Hammer King sono attivi musicalmente dal 2015. Sai, da qualche parte ho letto tantissimi commenti da parte di persone provenienti da ogni parte del mondo che asserivano che sia il power che l’heavy metal non abbiano più nulla da dire, specialmente nel 2022. Forse asseriscono ciò perché, probabilmente, provano nostalgia, ma quale è il tuo pensiero in merito? Davvero il metal è morto come tantissima gente sta confermando o, al contrario, ha ancora qualcosa da dire?
TITAN FOX V – Ho avuto un pensiero, voglio dire, niente di nuovo significa che tutti devono fare la stessa cosa tutto il tempo, ma allo stesso tempo, probabilmente direi che James Bond è ancora in giro dopo 60 anni. È la stessa idea. Star Wars è in giro da quasi 45 anni o poco più, tutti quanti noi mangiamo ancora carne, patate, pasta e pizza ed è la stessa cosa. Negli anni ’90, tutti dicevano: “Ci dovrà essere innovazione nel metal” e forse questa è stata la parentesi peggiore che abbiamo avuto nel metal, in un certo modo. credo che non importa se vi sia stata probabilmente dell’innovazione nella musica, fintanto che noi pubblicheremo dischi heavy metal, melodic metal o power metal con brani ottimi. Sarà lo stesso piacere mangiare pasta per la 8millesima volta, visto quanto è buona. La amerai sempre. Il pubblico diventerà sempre più grande, così come i festival, per cui ci sarà molta scene, un sacco di interesse da inserire all’interno della musica. Ho suonato nella band di un mio amico, lui faceva musica wave rock, dark wave, questo genere di cose. L’ho aiutato per un paio di concerti, era una band fantastica… ma quando l’ho fatto, ho potuto vedere cosa significhi davvero la comunità metal, poiché nella scena dark wave non c’è pubblico. Ci saranno stati 8, 10, forse 20 persone e tutti stavano fermi, in piedi, hanno apprezzato lo show ma sono rimasti fermi lì. Non si muovevano, forse ballavano un po’ ma la maggior parte del tempo sono rimasti lì e ho pensato che questa fosse una cosa molto tosta! Se pensi a ciò che accade nell’heavy metal, lo vedi che tutti ne fanno parte, forse qualcuno ti dirà se qualcosa fa schifo, ma sono tutti molto dediti e aperti, l’heavy metal è il più grande lusso che possiamo avere come musicisti, quando hai un pubblico metal è tutto al di sopra di qualsiasi cosa rispetto a tutto il resto.
Beh, credo che sia l’anno scorso che questo corrente abbiano dato agli Hammer King qualcosa di più su sui concentrarsi, ad eccezione della stesura e della registrazione di questi ultimi due dischi. Che cosa credi possa averti insegnato la pandemia durante quei giorni cupi?
TITAN FOX V – Dico che avevo ragione, che non bisognerebbe mai dare fiducia ai politici e che c’è troppa corruzione ovunque, tutto ruota intorno ai soldi delle persone che contano. A parte questo, mi ha insegnato che il sole brillerà ancora, non importa quanto schifoso sia stato nel frattempo. Mi ha insegnato che la musica calorosamente va avanti dopo questa parentesi, poiché il mio primo concerto dopo la pandemia è stato quello dei Genesis. Non vedevo l’ora, mi trovavo dentro un’arena enorme, tutti erano obbligati ad indossare mascherine e io mi trovavo seduto là e mi dicevo che era totalmente differente. Questa non era più musica, due persone erano lì in piedi a cantare, mentre il resto del pubblico era seduto. Ho pensato che tutto quanto fosse morto, per cui mi sono alzato, ho tolto la mascherina, sebbene fosse proibito e mi sono mosso dentro l’area. Ho pensato allora: “Okay, è tutto qui. Devi muoverti, interagire con la musica”. Il secondo concerto che ho visto era senza mascherine e tutti erano in piedi, per cui la situazione stava tornando alla normalità, questo è qualcosa che ho imparato. Devi avere la paura, a volte le cose vanno in modo sbagliato ma, onestamente, dopo un po’ le cose sono tornate ad essere nuovamente buone, per cui sopravviveremo a tutto quanto, almeno credo!
Titan, grazie di esserti preso del tempo per la concessione di questa intervista! C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai nostri lettori?
TITAN FOX V – Hey, popolo di Metalforce, vi ringrazio. Ringraziamo ognuno di voi per il tempo passato a seguire la musica heavy metal e per l’interesse che avete mostrato nei confronti degli Hammer King. Come musicista metal, so che non saremmo niente senza il supporto reciproco, senza la scena, il pubblico, la stampa e i musicisti… Non ci sarebbe niente, ma niente è più importante degli altri, per cui vi ringrazio molto del vostro supporto e del vostro interesse, e della vostra salute. Dio benedica il Re, possa il Re benedirvi tutti quanti!

14 months after the release of its self-titled studio album, German power metal act Hammer King gets back on track with a brand new record. “Kingdemonium” will be out on August 19th via Napalm Records and it shows off a band whose desire of ruling the world is increasing as much as the will of bringing its music outside the European borders. On this peculiar occasion, Metalforce introduces you a special interview that we conducted with the band’s frontman and guitar player Titan Fox V.
Hello Titan Fox V, welcome to Metalforce.it for this very chat of ours! How are you doing at the moment?
TITAN FOX V – Hello! I’m fantastic, great. First of all, I’m very happy to be with Metalforce. Nice to talk to Italy again. You are number five out of seven interviews in a row. So for me, that’s very, very nice. I
thought I would be tired after a while, but actually I’m feeling better than before. It’s wonderful to
talk to so many people. I really enjoy it a lot. And it’s warm outside, this is really a brutally hot
summer and gladly I can stay inside and do something really very funny. When I’m done with the
interviews tonight, I will go to the lake and swim. So the weather is fantastic.
We’re here today because we’re gonna give space to the new Hammer King album called “Kingdemonium”. The record will be out in one week. How do you feel when you release your art? Do you have any expectation concerning this brand new record?
TITAN FOX V – As long as you write the songs and as long as you especially record them, when you’re in the studio, you really only focus on the work that you do; that the vocals are good, that the guitars are fantastic and that everything falls into place. And then after a while, of course you start thinking about what will the people say. That’s the point where, of course, maybe you’re a little bit nervous. What will
happen? What will the people say? So at the moment, we are all very relaxed and very happy to, to
hear that everybody seems to like the other one.
This album comes out just one year after the previous one, your self-titled studio album. What has pushed you and the guys to release another record in such a short time? Did you have so much material useful for another album to pop up or, quite the opposite, did you feel so inspired that you created another record?
TITAN FOX V – The shitty Corona situation actually. I mean, we couldn’t make shows. We did, I think six or seven shows in ‘21. And there was a lot of spare time actually. When you’re a musician, you don’t want to
sit still and you write songs and you perform music. I think it was October when Napalm send us a
mail, “Hey, we would like to do another album with you”. And we were very happy because we wanted to do another album with Napalm. They told us “It seems as if the festivals will take place in ‘22, so it would be interesting to have an album when the festivals start.” We say, oh yeah, wonderful idea, we like that. And then they said: “When you wanna have the album for the festivals, you have to deliver album finished on March 1st”. This is interesting because it’s a very short time, and I remember I was talking to our drummer, and he’s one of the more critical persons in the band. And I said, “Dolph, do you think that we can make this?” And he said, “I think we can do that”. And then I said, “Okay, when you say we can, then we will do that”. And we were really maybe like the band did in the 80s. We were like this, only focused on the album and we work. We gave everything into the album and then we entered the studio on January 31st. So that was a very quick thing. And if you think back what the bands did in the 80s, you had one Iron Maiden album every year, sometimes two Saxon albums or Judas Priest albums in the same year.
So I think that the bands in the eighties, they did the same because they were touring and they were
recording everything in one year. And we did practically we did the same. So the spirit on the album
is very fresh because we didn’t have time to overthink. We just gave everything we had.
This record is the first one that sees your brand new bass player Gunt von Schratenau, what kind of contribution did he give to “Kingdemonium”? How would you describe his artistry?
TITAN FOX V – He has contributed a very pleasant atmosphere. He’s a very nice person. He’s super fantastic to be with and he is a brutally great bass player. He was the kind of person that we wanted to have quite for some years. And now he wanted, he had the time and everything was perfect. So when he came and played with us for the first time, he told me, “Yeah, I probably know five songs”. I said, okay,
why not that? And when he came, he knew 14 of our songs. And that was one song that we didn’t
even play. So we had to learn it! And when we worked on the album, we were all together in the
same room all the time, and everybody contributed to the songs. And sometimes it’s really
important, even if you just stand there and say, “I don’t think that this is a good part. The other part
is better”. We really worked as a team the entire time.
So far you’ve released two singles, “Pariah Is My Name” and “Invisible King”. What kind of reception did you get from the fans and the press?
TITAN FOX V – Very positive but different. It seems that especially American people they liked “Pariah Is My Name” better because they’re not super much into the very European melodic metal and the European people, they seem to enjoy “Invisible King” a lot. Basically the response was very positive for both. And next Wednesday, the final video single before the release will be “Kingdemonium”, the title track with a really epic video. We did a fantastic video and a very dark one with acting and everything. It was very different from the other videos and this will totally help to bring the band onto a higher level because it looks super professional.
Can you share with us a funny experience that happened during the recording session?
TITAN FOX V – One, but it’s actually not really funny. It’s a “wow” moment. Because when we were in the studio, Gino had a slight accident with boiling water. He was brewing some tea into a tea pot, but the pot broke from the heat, which it shouldn’t because it was made for heat. And it burned his left leg quite badly. So when we were in the middle of the studio and he was supposed to sing choirs with us, he came to the studio and he was totally in pain. It was really bad, but he told us “When I’m at home, I can only feel the pain. When I’m here, the pain is the same, but I do something to distract myself.! And we were singing for 12 ½ hours, or was it 14? I can’t remember. It was way too long and he would sing the entire time. So that was probably my biggest moment of the album, to see this dedication that he had to finish the work, no matter what happened. So may hat has to be lifted, chapeau as the French say to Gino, he was tremendous.
The album has been produced by Charles Greywolf from Powerwolf, while the mixing and the mastering have both been done by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios. What can you share about the work you’ve done with these guys?
TITAN FOX V – I must say that one of the best things that has happened to us in the last two years probably was that we finally got a team of wonderful people around the band. Jacob Hansen for the sound, of course, Charles has been around for longer even producing the albums, we have Mirko Witzki for the videos now, Ingo Spörl who does the artworks and the layout for everything, Peter Sallai who’s drawing the covers… So we have wonderful people to work with and all that helps and inspires a lot. I was there yesterday, we had sushi because Charles and I are big Ramones fans, and we love sushi a lot. And when we were in the studio, the sushi restaurant didn’t deliver because too many people were asking for it. There’s still this Corona thing they couldn’t do anymore. So there were far too many orders. And this was the first production for us ever without sushi, which was a scandal. So yesterday we sat together and we had the sushi and I told Charles “Now the production is perfect”. Charles is a friend. He’s a fantastic guy. And he is very relaxed and very concentrated. Even after 14 hours of choirs, he was still in a good mood and still recording it. And you know what he said, “Even if it takes longer, it has to be perfect”. So his spirit is very, very good. He’s a wonderful person. Jacob Hansen, I like the Pretty Maids album that he did. We really enjoy his sound a lot. And we wanted to have Jacob on board because he does traditional metal in a commercial and still very heavy way. So that was exactly what we wanted to have. It shall be melodic, it shall be commercial, but it shall be very heavy at the same time. And Jacob, I don’t know what he does really, but whenever he mixes us, I totally love my vocals. And as a vocalist, you’re very critical about yourself; when Jacob is doing the mixing, everything is perfect. I don’t know what he does.
I’d like to focus also on the artwork. At first, it reminded me something about “Carolus Rex” from Sabaton. Can you tell me something more about this stunning piece of art? How does also related to the concept of the album?
TITAN FOX V – Interesting! I mean, it is the same guy who did it. It’s Peter Sallai. But I think it’s different. We started working with Peter Sallai because we were looking for somebody who is specialized for this sort of music and also very trained in drawing and creating artwork for power metal or heavy metal bands, for popular bands actually. And I mean, I know that in metal people don’t like when you say “I wanted to sell”, but honestly, given all the time and the money that we have invested into the band, it has to sell. Otherwise we are done and we can’t stop. So, I mean, we were looking for somebody that we really like, and at the same time, the people like, and Peter Sallai is the guy. And after two years of Corona, everybody has to look how to survive actually, because we have invested a lot of money since we believe in the band. But if we don’t start getting some money back, then we’ll be no more money left actually. So of course, everybody, all the people in heavy metal who say, “I don’t care about what the audience says, I only do it for myself” either they really believe that, or they just tell that, because I mean, heavy metal is a music for people to sing together. If nobody likes the music, it will not be the same.
In your own opinion, which historical figure would appreciate “Kingdemonium”?
TITAN FOX V – This is the most difficoult question ever! Probably it would’ve been helpful if I wouldn’t have written songs back in the history lessons at school, which I did. My teachers thought that I would write down everything they say, but I was writing song lyrics at the same time. I will just try it. Maybe Julius Caesar.
Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?
TITAN FOX V – I mean, when you are in a band, there’s people around and that’s very good. Tomorrow I’m going hiking with one of the guys from the band. So really, we have the pleasure that the people we are working with, usually are friends and they’re nice people. But in a way you’re not, you’re probably right. I mean, when you look at normal people, they will go to the fitness studio twice a week or something like this. We always do music. And I mean, the bigger the band gets, the more everybody has to do alone. I mean, today I’m not alone, I’m talking with people, but I’m alone at home talking to people online. So that’s that’s many hours actually, but I’m in contact with people. So in the end it’s not really lonely, but sometimes is strange that you are so dependent on your art. When you write songs and every time you start writing a new album, the first ideas are not good. It’s always the same. And you feel very depressed about it. Although, you know that the better songs will come. At first, you think, “Oh my God, I have lost it”. And then once the good songs come, you feel as if you’re the king of the world, because this is the greatest thing in the world to create new music. If you’re a musician, of course. So, I mean, maybe when I think back of whom I’m a fan of, is it Freddie Mercury or Rob Halford, the more extreme people probably are the artists that everybody likes best, because they got something special. And maybe in a way it is that the singers are sometimes strange people because to do that, you must be a certain sort of a person to, to really want to do that. Of course that means that sometimes, maybe, usually people feel like this a little bit better, a little bit worse, and maybe artists will feel like this, but you learn to live with it. I mean, if you don’t feel good, you know that in a couple of days, you will feel like the greatest person in the world. It’s a bit more of a movement, but anyway, in the end you learn to live with it. Yeah. But it was a good question.
Hammer King has been active since 2015. You know, I’ve read somewhere tons of comments from people all over the world who stated that both power metal and heavy metal do not have anything to say anymore in 2022. Maybe they talk like this because they’re probably nostalgic, but what’s your opinion? Is metal dead as tons of people state or does it have more to say, instead?
TITAN FOX V – I just had a thought, I mean, nothing new means that they’re doing the same all the time, but at the, at the same time, I’d probably say James Bond is still around after 60 years. And it’s the same idea. Star Wars has been around for 45 or so. We still eat meat, potatoes, pasta and pizza and it’s always
the same. In the 90s, everybody was saying “There has to be innovation in metal”. And maybe that
was the worst time we ever had in metal, in a way. So I think it doesn’t matter if there’s probably no
innovation in the music, as long as we’re releasing heavy metal, melodic metal, power metal albums
with good songs. It will be just the same pleasure as eating pasta for the 8,000th time, as long as it’s
wonderful. You will always love it. The audiences are getting bigger, the festivals are getting bigger.
So there must be a lot of scene there, a lot of interest to put that music out actually. I played in a
band from a friend of mine, he was doing wave rock. So dark wave, stuff like this. And I helped him
out for a couple of shows; it was a fantastic band. But when I did this, I could see what the heavy
metal community really means, because in the wave scene, there is no audience. There were like 8-
10 or 20 people, and everybody was standing still. They liked it, but they still stood like this. They
didn’t move. Maybe they danced a bit, but most of the time they just stood there and I thought this is
really, really hard. And if you think what happens in heavy metal, everybody is into it. Maybe they
will tell you if it sucks, but they are totally dedicated and open. And so, I mean, heavy metal is
probably the biggest luxury you can have as a musician when you have a metal audience, because
it’s totally over the top compared to everything else.
Well, I guess that both last year and this one have given Hammer King something more to focus, except for the writing and the recording of two records. What do you think the pandemic has taught you through those darkest days?
TITAN FOX V – That I was right, that you should never trust politicians. And that there is corruption everywhere and everything is only for the money of the very big ones. So otherwise then this, it has taught me that the sun will always shine again, no matter how sucky it has felt in the meantime.It has taught me that gladly music goes on after it, because when the first concert that I would see after the pandemic was Genesis. I was so looking forward to that, I was there in the very huge arena. Everybody was forced to wear the masks. And I was sitting there and I said, it’s totally different. This is not music
anymore. Two people were standing there singing and the rest were sitting. I thought everything is
dead. Then I stood up myself, I removed the mask, although it was forbidden and I was moving
around. And then I thought, okay, this is what it’s all about. You have to move, you have to interact
with the music. The second show I saw was without masks and everybody was standing. And so
everything was back to normal again. So that was something that I learned. You have the fear,
sometimes that things get really bad, but honestly, after a while, things are getting back back to
good again. So we will survive anything, I think!
