AD INFINITUM – intervista esclusiva con Melissa Bonny – (english version below)

Durante la tappa italiana del tour che vede co-headliner Beyond the Black e Amaranthe, noi di Metalforce abbiamo avuto la chance di intervistare Melissa Bonny, frontwoman degli Ad Infinitum, opening act del tour, alla loro primissima data italiana. Nascita, stile e futuro di una giovane band con un grandissimo potenziale. Buona lettura!

Ciao e benvenuta su Metalforce! Siamo davvero felici di questa intervista in occasione della tappa italiana di questo tour. E’ un tour molto importante, anche per voi AD INFINITUM, come sta procedendo?
MELISSA: Alla grande! Per noi è un’opportunità fantastica di presentare la band finalmente. Quando è uscito il nostro primo album nel 2020 c’è stata la pandemia ed eravamo tristi di non poter lavorare ma alla fine i fan erano davvero affamati di musica e ci hanno supportato e adesso finalmente possiamo incontrarli dal vivo ed è fantastico! E’ davvero un grande tour e ne siamo super contenti!

Quindi ad ora il feedback dei fans e del pubblico in generale è positivo?
MELISSA: Si! Ed è sorprendente per una band nuova, non sapevamo cosa aspettarci ma è bellissimo arrivare sul palco e vedere il pubblico scatenarsi indossando le nostre magliette o cantando le parole… è incredibile!

Ad Infinitum è stato un progetto da te iniziato, ci vorresti descrivere come e lo stile ed obiettivo come band?
MELISSA: Certo! All’inizio doveva essere solamente un mio progetto solista, oltre ai miei altri impegni musicali, ma alla fine ci ho investito talmente tanta energia e tanto tempo a lavorarci che ho pensato di volerlo portare anche in sede di live. Ma non come “Melissa Bonny e i musicisti che suonano per lei” ma come band perché lo spirito è diverso, perché si lavora ad un obiettivo comune e si costruisce il tutto insieme come una band ed è qualcosa che mi piace molto. Fin da subito sapevo che avrei voluto Nick – Nicklas Muller – perché eravamo già stati in tour insieme ed è un musicista incredibile. La cosa divertente è che sa suonare tutti gli strumenti! Bhè , non tutti ma quasi! *Risate* Per lo meno tutti gli strumenti che servono in questa band! Quindi gli ho chiesto di unirsi al progetto e quale strumento avesse preferito . Lui è un batterista dotato cosi come un ottimo chitarrista ma puà suonare il basso e cantare pure. Lui ha deciso di suonare la batteria e abbiamo trovato il chitarrista perfetto , Adrian, ed è stato lui a suggerirci Corby come bassista dopo che il primo che avevamo trovato non ha potuto proseguire per problemi di salute. Quindi infine ci conoscevamo già tutti ed è così che il nostro stile ha preso forma. Il primo disco era più sinfonico mentre quest’ultimo tende di più ad uno stile moderno e metal e sentiamo quindi di aver trovato il nostro sound.

Quindi gli Ad Infinitum sono una band giovane con già due album all’attivo ma il tutto durante un periodo di pandemia. Con un inizio così particolare quali sono quindi i paini futuri della band?
MELISSA: E’ stato certamente un inizio speciale dato che eravamo nel mezzo di una pandemia, un qualcosa che nessuna band aveva sperimentato prima e abbiamo dovuto imparare ad avere a che fare con ciò. Abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per essere in contatto con i fans e alla fine è fantastico vedere quanta gente si è raccolta intorno alla band, ascoltando la nostra musica. Durante il periodo a casa abbiamo avuto tanto tempo per registrare e così abbiamo inciso il primo disco e la sua versione acustica e il secondo disco. Adesso siamo in procinto di far uscire il terzo album proprio perché abbiamo avuto a disposizione tanto tempo non essendo stai in tour.

Il symphonic metal con voce femminile è un genere molto popolare e apprezzato in Europa, con già una lunga storia. Quali sono le influenze principali degli Ad Infinitum e dove possiamo collocare la band nella scena europea?
MELISSA: E’ interessante dato che abbiamo tante influenze da diversi generi, non solo il metal. Ognuno nella band apprezza diversi generi dal metal, al pop, al jazz. Abbiamo influenze di band come Kamelot, Within Temptation, Delain, Nightwish … tutti i grandi nomi che hanno creato una strada a questo genere musicale. Ma non solamente gruppi metal, anche i Muse per esempio hanno creato qualcosa di nuovo, o cantanti pop come Lady Gaga, artisti che hanno portato la loro musica nel mondo in maniera molto forte. Mi hai chiesto dove colloco la band nella scena europea, direi che sebbene non abbiamo inventato del tutto un nuovo genere , abbiamo creato il nostro sound mischiando tutte queste diverse influenze e io spero che venga percepito come qualcosa di nuovo e fresco dai fans.

Com’è essere in tour con altre band con uno stile più meno simile ma che hanno già un loro fanbase?
MELISSA: Sta andando benissimo! Per noi è un modo perfetto per presentarci al pubblico. I fans degli Amaranthe e Beyond the Black ma anche dei Butcher Babies sono tutti potenziali fans anche delle nostre canzoni. L’atmosfera è la stessa e si possono trovare elementi in comune nel modo in cui facciamo musica. Lo vediamo ad ogni data, molta gente ci scopre per la prima volta e inizia a seguirci.. E questa è la miglior cosa secondo noi perché è una buona combinazione tra trovare nuovi fans e farci scoprire da chi ancora non aveva sentito parlare di noi.

Quindi per riassumere questa intervista dove abbiamo parlato di questo inizio post pandemia per la band , quali sono gli obiettivi futuri per la band? Qualche news che possiamo già sapere?
MELISSA: Certamente! Cioè posso essere un po’ vaga almeno (risate) Siamo in procinto di confermare tour per l’anno prossimo e speriamo anche al di fuori dell’Europa perché vogliamo incontrare tutte le persone che ci seguono. Siamo una nuova band e ci piacerebbe andare ovunque e un po’ per volta stiamo organizzando concerti in giro. Uno è già stato annunciato, quello al Prog Power ad Atlanta negli Stati Uniti e sarà un primo passo per volare fuori dall’Europa e incontrare nuovi fan. Poi ci saranno i festival estivi il prossimo anno e il nostro terzo album che uscirà il 31 marzo!

Hello and welcome on Metalforce! Very glad we have the chance to talk with you during the italian date of this tour. This is a very important tour, also for Ad Infinitum, so how it is going so far?
MELISSA: It’s great! For us it’s a fantastic opportunity to present the band, finally, because we released the first album in 2020 and then the pandemic happened. So it was very sad because we could not work but in the end the fans were super hungry for music and they supported us and now finally we can meet them for real and it’s fantastic! It’s such a great tour and we’re super happy!

So how’s the feedback of the fans and the audience in general? Positive?
MELISSA: Yes! And it’s so surprising since we are a new band, we don’t know what to expect, and it’s so cool when we arrive on stage and we see people partying wearing our t-shirts or singing the lyrics … it’s incredible!

Ad Infinitum project was started by you, do you want to describe how it started , style and goals for the band.
MELISSA: Sure! When I created the band, first was supposed to be just a solo project beside the other things I was doing and I ended up working a lot on it,, investing a lot of energy and time and i thought that i really wanted to bring it on stage. But not as “Melissa Bonny and other people playing with her” but as a band, because it’s a different spirit. It’s different cause you have a common goal and you build it together when you are a band and that’s something that I really love. Immediately I knew I would have ask Nick cause we’ve been touring together and he’s a fantastic musician. The fun thing is that Nick can play all instruments you can think of! Well, not all but almost! *Laughs * At least all instruments we have in this band so i asked him if he wanted to join this project and which instrument he wanted to play. He’s a great drummer as well as guitar player and he can play bass and sing too. He decided to take the drums, then we found the perfect guitar player- Adrian -, the first bass player had to leave because of health issue but then Adrian said he knew the perfect bass player for the project so Corby joined. So we all knew each other and this how we shaped the sound of the band cause the first record was more symphonic and the second one more modern and metal oriented and we really feel like we found our style.

So Ad Infinitum is a new band with two records out during the pandemic . After such peculiar start what are the future plans of the band?
MELISSA: It was a very special start as it was in the middle of a pandemic , something that not many bands experience as it was something new for everybody, so we had to learn how to deal with it and tried to connect to the fans the best we could. In the end it’s just fantastic to see how people gathered around the band, listening to our music. While being at home we had a lot of time to record so we recorded our first album , its acoustic version and the second album. Now we are in the process of releaseing the third one because we had so much time, as we were not touring, so that was our way to stay connected to the fans.

Female fronted symphonic metal is very popular and appreciated in the european scene and has a long history already. What are the main influences of Ad Infinitum style and where the band finds its place in this scene?
MELISSA: It’s interesting cause we have lots of influences from different genres, not even only metal. Everyone in the band is into many genres, from metal to pop to jazz. We do have influence from bands like Kamelot, Within Temptations, Delain, Nightwish and all these big names that created the path for female fronted bands. But not only metal bands, also Muse, a band that created a new sound, or pop singers like Lady Gaga , artists that bring music to the world in a very strong way. You asked where I place the band in the european scene, I would say while we didn’t invent a completely new genre we created our own sound by mixing all those dufferent influences and I hope is something new and fresh for the audience.

How is to be on tour with other bands of the same genre , that already have their fanbase? How is this whole experience going?
MELISSA: It’s going great! I think for us it’s the perfect introduction because fans of Amaranthe and Beyond The Black but also fans of Butcher Babies actually, they potentially would like our songs as well. It’s the same atmosphere and we have common elements in the way we do music. We see it every date that people discover us and start to follow us , and that’s the best thing for us . It’s a good match to find new fans and people that just never heard about us yet.

So, to sum up the interview, after we talked about this very first year post pandemic for the band and what are the next goals in the near future?
MELISSA: Sure! I mean at least I can be a little vague about (laughs) we are in the process of comfirming new tours next year and hopefully to get outside of Europe because we really want to meet all the fans who have been following the band . We are a new band and we would like to go everywhere and little by little booking shows all over. Actually one already is announced, Prog Power in Atlanta in the States. And is the first step for us to fly to the US , play a show and meet people there! Then of course, we have summer festivals next year and the next album coming out on March 31!
